Having been a member of Cainhoe Wood Golf Club (previously Beadlow Manor) for nearly 40 years, it’s safe to say I’ve witnessed both the good and bad times firsthand…
When John O’Leary asked me to be his Club Captain for the 2021/22 season it must have taken me at least 5 seconds to make the decision to accept this privileged opportunity. I could see early doors what John and the team were looking to do and I wanted to join them on the journey.
For me and my family (Gina - wife, Hannah & Caitlin - daughters) Captain’s Day was always going to be the highlight of the year due to the fact that my Captain's Charity is the Sue Ryder, St John’s Hospice, Moggerhanger.
Both my late mother (1994) and late father (2011) spent their last days there and the care / support they received was truly amazing. As some of you will be aware, Vince Kelly (my father), was President of Beadlow Manor for over 11 years, so I knew it would have been a proud day for him.
With certain COVID-19 restrictions still in place, the day itself ran smoothly, especially considering there were nearly 150 people playing in the Competition… The weather was kind to us, the golf was played in great spirit and the members & guests were amazingly generous when it came to the raffle and donations.
I’m pleased to say that £1,869.74 was raised on the day (mostly thanks to Mrs Kelly, who made over £1,400 on the raffle) and I’m pleased to say that since then Barclays Bank have matched this sum (thanks to Lecy Robinson), so the total amount raised was £3,739.48 - which it amazing.
I would like to thank everyone (members, guests & staff) for making my Captain’s Day a day to remember at a club we can all be truly proud of.
Best wishes,
Rob Kelly
Club Captain 2021/22
