Cainhoe Wood Juniors

Cainhoe Wood runs a highly successful Junior Section catering for all standards with its team players regularly enjoying success across various interclub competitions in the local area, and much further afield.  Under the old title of Beadlow Manor, the team won the 2017 Junior Team Golf UK Championship, travelling to Portugal to play against some top teams from the home nations, including St Andrews, and the Section has continued to enjoy notable and more recent success (see Roll of Honour below).

Our long serving and established Junior Organiser, Gary Boyle, has a wealth of experience and proven track record (gained over the past 17 years) of identifying, supporting and developing junior golfers to whatever standard they aspire.  Gary is invariably available to meet with new members and ensure integration to the Section, as appropriate, providing guidance and advice to all our active juniors.  Regular Friday rollups and internal competitions, plus an extensive interclub program of events, and access to expert coaching are available to all members, and we as a club remain keen to add new junior golfers to what is already a thriving section.

Jayden Slender

Junior Captain 2025

Captain's Message

Hello everyone,

My name is Jayden Slender, and I’ve been a junior at Cainhoe Wood Golf Club for the past six years. The club has played a big part in my development as a golfer, so it’s a real privilege—and an honour—to now represent the junior section as your Junior Captain for 2025. I’m really excited for the year ahead and look forward to supporting all our junior members, encouraging new players to get involved, and helping to make our section as fun and welcoming as possible.

One of the best ways to get involved is by joining our Friday Night Roll-Up evenings – they’re open to all juniors, no matter your level of experience. They’re relaxed, friendly, and a great way to meet others and enjoy the game.

We have some great events planned, and I hope to see as many of you as possible out on the course. Whether you’re here to compete or just enjoy the game with friends, let’s make this a year to remember.

Junior Golf is a big priority for us at Cainhoe Wood, so we continue to offer Junior Group Lessons on Saturday afternoons with one of our PGA Professionals, Glen Kemble.  In addition, PGA professional Elliott Appleby and John O’Leary are also available to provide lessons at other times if this suits you better.  The group lessons remain a great place for new juniors to learn the key fundamentals of grip, swing, alignment, etc., but also to interact with one another and create new friends, as they improve.  The lessons are structured so that it is open to Juniors of all ages and abilities, so everyone can get involved, with the aim of transitioning to playing on the course as soon as is appropriate.  For more information, click the button below.

Friday Night Roll-Up

The Junior Section Friday rollup is available to all members of the Junior Section and remains a casual and fun way for all juniors to get to know each other better and create lasting friendships, as well as being a chance to practice on the course in a safe and supportive environment.  From 5:00pm, the Juniors assemble on the Putting Green and go out to play up to 9 holes in various formats, often with a competitive element.  Those new to the section plus the younger, less experienced golfers all get the chance to mix with the more established players and gain experience, which could be really valuable later in their golfing journeys.

(Please note: All juniors attending rollup should have contacted the Junior Organiser ahead of initial attendance to ensure they are at an appropriate standard and are compliant with our Safeguarding Policy)

Reports from the Course

The 2025 season has seen lots of golf played at Friday night rollups, internal competitions and in numerous interclub matches across multiple competitions.

The team golf calendar has been very busy with the first interclub activity in the Herts League (matchplay format, 3 singles & 2 greensomes) and 3 early and impressive away wins at East Herts, Brookmans Park and Essendon during April and May, were followed by 3 home wins against the same teams in June and August which saw progression unbeaten to the 2-legged semi-final and a guaranteed place at the Herts Finals Day.  Formidable semi-final opposition await in the shape of Bishops Stortford with Enfield and Knebworth contesting the other semi-final, with the winners progressing to the Shield final and losers to the Plate, both to be played at West Herts on Sun 19 October. The Bedfordshire Interclub was held this year at The Bedfordshire GC (14 Jun), with 17 teams of three from 8 different clubs contesting the event, using a combined stableford score from all players.  Despite great efforts from both Cainhoe teams on a tough day for scoring we were off the pace in this event, which saw the home team narrowly losing out to Leighton Buzzard on countback, both scoring an impressive 116 points.  Our Tavistock Trophy campaign (strokeplay, 2 gross 2 nett from teams of 6) saw the team drawn against John O’Gaunt (JOG) and Stockwood Park; the first match away at JOG (21 Jun) saw a very good performance by the home club to secure emphatic wins over both Cainhoe Wood and Stockwood. Our home leg played the following week (28 Jun) saw a much closer affair but Cainhoe were pipped by JOG on the day, a result which saw JOG progress to the final.  The final fixture was played at Stockwood Park (26 Jul) and all 6 Cainhoe players shot to around handicap or better.  Our local rivals South Beds were also kind enough to offer us a friendly match (Jun 8) and some of less experienced junior players enjoyed a great day out in Luton, and a 6-2 win in a singles matchplay format.  The Vale league (singles matchplay) has been very competitive this year, with an initial 3-3 home draw with Leighton Buzzard (24 May) followed by an impressive 4-2 win over local rivals and current Vale champions The Millbrook (13 Jul).  Two weeks later (27 Jul) it was the turn of a very strong Woburn team to visit and another well-deserved home win (4.5-1.5).  An away loss to Buckingham (2-4) and then an emphatic 5-1 home win v The Bedfordshire (a fixture which also included a full 6 player reserve match with 24 juniors playing on the day) now mean that the last game of the season away at Aspley Guise at the end of September will decide the league winners, with a win required for Cainhoe juniors to secure the title.

Players who have played for the club:-

Our 2025 Captain Jayden Slender has also seen individual success playing in the recent Beds Schools Golf Association Handicap event held at Aylesbury Vale GC. Jayden played some impressive golf to achieve a superb 42 points to win the event. In addition, there was more Schools golf success for our Juniors at the High Handicap event played at Cainhoe (14 Jul) where local knowledge saw Rocco Lehri win the Boys individual event (with an amazing 53 points) and also the team event for Redborne Upper with Sam Dunn (35 points), whilst Martha Burr returned a fantastic 42 points to secure runners up in the Girls event.  Lukey Buxton has also won 2 of the four 9-hole Beds County Golf rookie events held across the summer. There have been 11 internal competitions run to date with nett wins for Matty Beeming (2), Sam Dunn, Harley Endersby, Lukey Buxton, Josh O’Shaughnessy (2), Joel Platt (2), Charlie Collison and Josh Thoulass. The Junior Club championships held just before the end of the summer holidays saw 24 competitors play for scratch and handicap honours over 36 holes on Manor and Castle courses, with some excellent performances.  Our Junior scratch champion for 2025 was Joel Platt (total 164) with Luke Lehri finishing in second (172) in the gross competition, with Rocco Lehri winning the handicap event by a single shot (with 139) ahead of Sam Dobson and Josh O’Shaughnessy (both 140).  The best nett score returned over the 2 days was an outstanding nett 60 by Josh Moore on the second day.
