Cainhoe Wood Juniors

Header.jpg

Cainhoe Wood runs a highly successful Junior Section catering for all standards with its team players regularly enjoying success across various interclub competitions in the local area, and much further afield.  Under the old title of Beadlow Manor, the team won the 2017 Junior Team Golf UK Championship, travelling to Portugal to play against some top teams from the home nations, including St Andrews. In the past two years alone (2021 and 2022) Cainhoe Wood Juniors have amazingly won 8 competitions. Our long serving and established Junior Organising team have a wealth of experience of identifying and developing junior golfers. They are available to meet with new members and ensure integration to the Section, as appropriate.  They provide guidance and support to all active juniors and run both regular internal competitions and an extensive interclub program of events, but remain keen to grow what is already a large and thriving section.

A note from the Captain

To all current and future juniors of Cainhoe Wood Golf Club.

When I was asked to be captain this year I felt honoured to be selected and supported by such a successful, supportive and encouraging club. From the juniors to the organisers and all the way to our club owner, everyone has made me feel welcome and wanting to do the best for our section. I look forward to giving that similar feeling to other juniors by supporting and helping you enjoy your golf to the fullest this year.

The bond our juniors make with others in our section is what helps makes our team more successful and allows us to succeed in all the big competitions we play in. This is something I am passionate for others to experience as I have over my enjoyable years at the club.

I look forward to seeing more new juniors join our club and section over the next 12mths of my captaincy and to our continued success.

Junior Golf Tuition

Junior Golf is a big priority for us at Cainhoe Wood, so we continue to offer Junior Group Lessons on Saturday afternoons with one of our PGA Professionals, Glen Kemble.  In addition, PGA professional Elliott Appleby and John O’Leary are also available to provide lessons at other times if this suits you better.  The group lessons remain a great place for new juniors to learn the key fundamentals of grip, swing, alignment, etc., but also to interact with one another and create new friends, as they improve.  The lessons are structured so that it is open to Juniors of all ages and abilities, so everyone can get involved, with the aim of transitioning to playing on the course as soon as is appropriate.  For more information, click the button below.

Friday Night Roll-Up

The Junior Section Friday Roll-Ups are available to all members of the Junior Section and remain a great and fun way for all juniors to get to know each other better and create lasting friendships, as well as being a chance to practice on the course in a safe and supportive environment.  From 5:30pm, the Juniors assemble on the Putting Green and go out in 3 balls to play up to 9 holes, often with a competitive element involved.  Those new to the section plus the younger, less experienced golfers all get the chance to mix with the more established players and gain a great amount of experience, which could be really valuable later in their golfing journeys.  Currently, we have around 25 active Juniors that are involved in the Roll Ups, with some more up and coming Juniors transitioning through the Coaching Scheme.

(Please note: All juniors attending rollup should have contacted a member of the Junior Organising team ahead of initial attendance to ensure they are at an appropriate standard and to ensure adherence to our Safeguarding Policy).

Competitions

Following another successful 2022 season which saw defence of the Tavistock Trophy, The Vale League and the Bert Yates Trophy, plus a first success in the new Herts League, the 2023 season has started well for the Cainhoe Wood juniors.

A narrow reverse (via playoff) to Peterborough Milton in the BCCS sponsored National Matchplay event was shrugged off quickly with strong performances in the first Vale league match (6-0 win v Buckingham) and two victories in the Herts League group stage beating Bishops Stortford 7-3 at home, and a very impressive 9-1 success away at Knebworth.  The group stages of the prestigious Tavistock Trophy have also now played out against Beds & County, Aylesbury Vale and South Beds.  The home match saw three wins secured in comfortable fashion and another away win at Aylesbury Vale, with narrow losses at Beds & County and South Beds, resulting in Cainhoe Wood comfortably qualifying in second place in the group for their eleventh consecutive appearance in the Tavistock Trophy final (no event in 2020) to be played at Cainhoe Wood (as holders) on Friday 25 Aug.

Tavistock Trophy Squad: Will Chapman, Harry Lake, Ed Tubridy, Jago Skerratt, Jack Skelton, Jayden Slender, Oliver Clark, Sam Harris, Scott Kemp and Amanda Ellis

In addition, the Junior Interclub recently played at Aylesbury Vale saw further success.  The two teams of 3 selected for Cainhoe Wood were up against the best of the other clubs in Bedfordshire and duly filled the top two spots in an enthralling event.  Jago Skerratt, Sam Harris and Scott Kemp posted an impressive 120 stableford points total, but were pipped at the post by a single shot by the second Cainhoe team of Jack Skelton, Jayden Slender and Charlie Simpson to see them win the Bedfordshire Junior Interclub and duly qualify to represent Bedfordshire at the National Junior Champion club at Woodhall Spa (16/17 Aug).
